GPS Location: -3.5054859, 36.7784396
Oldenderet primary school is located in a very rural village of Arusha with 358 students. When we first visited in 2019 it was facing many challenges such as dangerous toilets for boys and girls, lack of water, and extremely poor condition of classrooms.
Oldenderet community is extremely committed and we have already successfully partnered with them on several projects such as building toilet blocks and installing hand washing facilities. Hundreds of community members have got involved in offering free labour and discounted materials to make a better school for the children.
There’s still lots to do at Oldenderet Primary School such as renovating the extremely dilapidated classrooms which are posing a risk to students safety. Students’ attendance has been dropping when it’s raining because they don’t like to sit at a desk where the rain pours in through the windows that have no glass. This is decreasing their opportunities to learn and we need to fix this fast to help prevent a future full of poverty.
Although the school has a water tap, a shortage of water still remains at the school which is causing students to remain thirsty during class leading to poor concentration. Plus there is no water to clean the toilets and classrooms or cook food (when food is available).

How we’re supporting Oldenderet students
Our partnership with Oldenderet community began in 2021 and we are actively supporting this school with the following four programmes:
Let Us Learn: School builds
Still to do: Renovate 9 existing classrooms and build 2 new classrooms.
Transparency Truth: On average it costs just £2750/£3000 to renovate a whole classroom, even with new desks, so 45 students can learn comfortably and effectively.
Being Well: Health
Completed: Construction of hand washing facilities and education programme about hygiene for 358 students.
Transparency Truth: It only costs around £3,000 to install a large hand washing facility with 10 taps, a water supply and educational programme at our schools.
Girl Empowerment: Health education for girls
Completed: Construct 9 girls toilets, 1 accessible toilet, 2 boys toilets and a urinal area. Implement a Menstrual Hygiene Management Project, including reusable menstruation products, for 60+ girls
Water Is Life: Clean Water
Still to do: Install 12 rain water harvesting tanks to provide enough water for drinking, cleaning and cooking
